Colours

Colours is a project put in place by CoLAB (Collaborative Laboratory) aiming to connect young creative students studying at Birmingham City University with the Birmingham Museum of Art and History, BMAG.

Each group made of two students in Interior Design, two students in Product Design and a student in Architecture, had to design the scenography of an exhibition planned in a given room within the museum.

Therefore, the role of our team is to design the scenography of the ‘Colors’ exhibition bringing together various works (paintings, minerals, taxidermy, etc.) and aimed at narrating the use of color by artists, its role in emotions but also its scientific origin and in particular the creation of pigments.

The room allocated to us is a round room redistributing two areas of the museum. Its affluence and majesty make it an important part of the visit.

Appropriating the room involves studying the visitors and staff moves, as well as being aware of possible modifications within the given space.

Despite the glass ceiling, the room remains very dark: working on light is imperative.

The art pieces selected by the curator are studied according to their dimensions and their colour

shades.

The round reminds us of the chromatic circle. The idea of a circular scenography was born, highlighting the particular architecture of the space.

The scenography is therefore based on an artistic representation of the light spectrum materialized by colored wires suspended from the glass ceiling.

The colors distributed according to the chromatic circle are materialized by a curved wall on which the works are presented. Visitors are free to follow the logical order of shades or just walk right through the room.
